New Editor-in-Chief

New Editor-in-Chief

Small Enterprise Research News

Prof Tom Cooney has recently completed his time as Editor-in-Chief, having been in the role since September 1st 2015. During his time as editor, the journal became ranked amongst the Entrepreneurship and Small Business journals by the UK-based Chartered Association of Business Schools, while key metrics such as citations improved significantly. The average time from submission to review and average time from submission to Accept / Reject has also improved substantially, plus the number of submissions has increased each year. The articles published now have a greater global geographical spread than the tradition target market of Oceania as promotion of the journal was pushed into new markets. Small Enterprise Research has moved from producing one Issue per year to three Issues per year, with six Special Issues being produced during Tom’s tenure. The reaction to Issue 23.3 on Small Business Policy was so positive that it was published as a book by Routledge. Other new developments in recent years have included the addition of a voluntary Marketing Executive to the Editorial Team and the introduction of a Panel of Reviewers who offered their services to the journal. All this work could not have been achieved without the fantastic supporting work of the Associate Editors (Martina Battisti, Sujana Adapa and Bernice Kotey) and the SEAANZ Presidents (Tim Mazzarol and Tui McKeown). While stepping down as Editor, Tom will continue to support the work of the journal in his new role as Associate Editor.

We are delighted to announce that Dr Breda Kenny is our new Editor-in-Chief. Breda will be supported in her role by Tom Cooney and Sujana Adapa as Associate Editors and by Members of the Editorial Board and the Panel of Reviewers. Breda is head of School of Business at Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland and a member of the board of the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB). She has many years lecturing, academic management and research experience in entrepreneurship and international business. She has published in journals such as R & D Management, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research, Industry & Higher Education, The Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development and Small Enterprise Research. Breda has extensive industry experience and is also co-founder and director of Surecom NS Ltd, and director of the Rubicon Innovation Centre.

Represented by SEAANZ President, Associate Professor Tui McKeown, the two-day conference in Paris brought together global experts for a timely discussion as to the future of entrepreneurship and the role that research can play in developing, evaluating, and administering effective policy in the small business and entrepreneurship space.

A Message from the new Editor-in-Chief

My sincerest thanks to the Board of SEAANZ for this exciting opportunity to build on Tom’s great work. It is an honour and a privilege to serve in this role. Over a three-year period from 2019 – 2022, my vision for Small Enterprise Research is, together with the Editorial Board, to maintain and strengthen the journal’s international performance and reputation. Given the development of the journal in recent years, I do not propose radical changes under my leadership. However, Small Enterprise Research will need to continue to evolve to ensure full advantage is taken of the rapidly changing field we are operating in. To achieve this, we will:

  1. Commit to publishing quality, relevant and impactful articles.
  2. Commit to making effective and speedy editorial decisions.
  3. Continue the publication of special issues with a minimum of two special issues per year and one general issue.
  4. Expand our presence and appeal to a broader international audience.
  5. Strengthen and facilitate our relationship with SEAANZ to develop the Journal in terms of rankings, proposals for Conference and Special Issues, and to build and promote the Small Enterprise Research brand.

With Taylor & Francis continued support on editorial and promotion, we also aim for the highest standards in all aspects of the journal’s management and operations and to improve citation and ranking metrics. I look forward to working with all of you in continuing to make Small Enterprise Research a quality and respected journal in the field. I welcome your submissions, feedback and support as authors, readers, and reviewers of our journal.
